Topic-Oriented Portals
A topic-oriented portal is a web portal application whose structure makes use of the basic principles of topic maps. In this portal architecture, information is presented in relationship to subjects, with each subject having its own "homepage".
A subject homepage displays the information related to a subject and the relationships between the subject and other subjects with homepages on the portal.
In addition to this basic page-per-subject view, the topic-oriented architecture can be extended to support hierarchical classification of subjects and even faceted classification schemes.
In this article we present the basic concepts of a topic-oriented portal and show the benefits of this approach for the portal developer, content creator and end-user.
